Growing up in rural Uganda, Akramz Ssemambo saw firsthand how communities were disconnected from tourism. Poverty, lack of access to education, and environmental degradation are everyday challenges, while tourism often benefits only a few. Many of these communities are also heavily reliant on coffee production as a source of income, but face challenges, including disconnection from markets.

Muyaayu Wild Adventure Safaris is a Ugandan-based social enterprise dedicated to transforming the tourism and coffee industries into catalysts for social, environmental, and economic change, redefining tourism and coffee as drivers of sustainable development, community empowerment, and ecological conservation. Founded by Akram Ssemambo with the vision of going beyond traditional safaris, Muyaayu offers immersive experiences that connect travelers with Uganda’s breathtaking wilderness, vibrant culture, and resilient communities while creating lasting social impact. Every booking made, a portion of 25percent of our profits goes to support community development. Our coffee project empowers rural farmers in Mpigi and Elgon by giving them access to ethical markets, and every gram sold helps fund community services.

Services & Activities

Wildlife Safaris with Muyaayu Wild Safaris take you into the heart of Uganda’s breathtaking national parks, home to some of the world’s most iconic wildlife. From gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga, to chimpanzee tracking in Kibale and Budongo Forests, and game drives in Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, Lake Mburo, and Kidepo Valley National Parks, every safari is an unforgettable adventure. These journeys offer close encounters with elephants, lions, giraffes, hippos, and hundreds of bird species, showcasing the true richness of the Pearl of Africa’s wilderness.

Coffee Safaris with Muyaayu Wild Safaris take you deep into Uganda’s coffee heartlands, Mpigi, Rwenzori, and Elgon regions, to discover the journey from farm to cup. Travelers walk alongside smallholder farmers, learning about cultivation, harvesting, processing, and brewing, while experiencing Uganda’s rich coffee culture firsthand. Each safari directly supports rural farming communities by promoting ethical trade, women’s empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods through coffee.

People in the Zombo district suffer from high levels of poverty, with many households can barely afford a meal per day. The peasant farmers lack enough disposable incomes to support their families with good education, feeding, and decent accommodation. The whole district has very few iron-roofed houses, as the majority are grass-thatched huts.

Uganda Bureau of Statistics 2018 report further states that 92.7% of the population is below senior four qualifications. In 2021, it was reported that over 4100 girls got pregnant because many children could not go to school and were redundant. The farmers in this region resort to farming coffee as a major cash crop. However, little has improved as they suffer from poor crop yields and lack of a proper market since they lack the disposable income to buy good farm inputs and seeds.

We offer high-quality, affordable coffee seedlings, free pulping services for the coffee farmers’ produce, training and consultation, plus a fair price for their products. We raise our coffee from a well-researched variety thanks to our technical officers and in partnership with government laboratories. Furthermore, we germinate the seedlings graft with palatable coffee that is high yielding and pest resistant that we sell at a low cost. The free pulping services we give to coffee farmers are done to motivate farmers to add value to their coffee. For example, pulped coffee goes between 7,500-8,500shs, and the cherries farmers sell directly from the garden, which farmers sell 1,700-2,000shs a kilogram. This at least enables farmers to earn higher revenue from the coffee pulped than selling it directly from their garden in cherry form. The husks generated in the pulping process are decomposed into fertilizers used in the farm and coffee seed-beds to encourage the growth of 100% of organically grown coffee. We work with these peasant farmers as our coffee agents. For example, this coffee season, we partnered with five farmers to act as middlemen staged at the different trading centers to help buy coffee on our behalf and connect us with other farmers in different areas that have coffee. We also train farmers on better agronomist practices, which is done through hands-on training on the farm.

The current Coffee producing companies are profit-oriented. They determine the buying price for the peasant farmers. They also charge highly for the pulping service they offer to the farmers for one basin of coffee cherries. Not only that, but they will take 10 cups as a pulping fee, while we offer free pulping services in the area to enable coffee farmers to add value to their coffee. During pulping, coffee husks are produced, which decompose to generate organic manure that we apply as fertilizers in the coffee nursery bed to grow 100% organically grown seedlings.

Farm+ transforms locally sourced organic waste into high-quality, protein-rich animal feed by utilizing the larvae of the Black Soldier Fly. By harnessing these natural recycling agents, the enterprise provides a sustainable, year-round alternative to conventional feeds that are often expensive, seasonal, and compete with human food sources. This approach not only reduces waste and improves food security, but also delivers an affordable, high-protein supplement that helps livestock farmers increase their productivity while minimizing costs.

The social enterprise works closely with women and smallholder farmers in rural Uganda, equipping them with valuable skills and establishing a network of local suppliers and distributors. The organic byproducts from the insect breeding process are converted into nutrient-rich compost, reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers and improving soil health. In this way, the Farm+ model fosters a sustainable, circular economy that benefits communities, the environment, and future generations. Farm+ also offers training programs that enable farmers—particularly single mothers and vulnerable households—to cultivate their own Black Soldier Fly larvae, ensuring a steady supply of affordable feed.

With Uganda’s rapidly growing population of close to 50 million healthy foods are high on demand but unaffordable for refugees living far from urban centres, where items have to be transported long distances. This is why Loketa Agrofarm locally grows and sources peanuts and sesame seeds to locally produce healthy and affordable pure and organic cooking oils. These oils are extracted using cold-pressed and expeller-pressed methods without chemicals or solvents, preserving their natural vitamins and minerals. This approach supports health and increases income for refugees, providing a unique and eco-friendly solution.

One of the main causes of infant mortality in the DRC is malnutrition (about 296,000 deaths of children under five in 2018), this stems from acute food insecurity caused by different factors such as conflicts and the insecurity, with population displacement and loss of livelihoods. However, the diversity of diets and the frequency of meals are insufficient, the staple crops for the DRC in general and South Kivu in particular are essentially cassava, maize and beans, followed by rice. Dairy products, meat, fish, eggs, fruits, and vegetables are consumed occasionally and are expensive on the market. Hence, the establishment of a food substitute for these products and likely to contribute to eradicating the problem of malnutrition is essential.

Given the exceptional nutritional power of soy, making available its by-products such as soy milk, soy nuggets, soy butter, soybean oil, etc., is a solution that can eradicate the concern of undernourishment. To achieve this, Soy can validly replace several products, in this case meat, eggs and milk, which are lacking and by virtue of its composition. One kilogram of soy is equivalent in protein to 40 kg of cassava, 13 litres of cow milk, 3 kg of beef and 60 chicken eggs. Soy is therefore a cultivated plant richest in proteins, mineral elements and other nutrients essential to human health (vitamin A, B, C, D, F and K).

It is a product accessible at a lower cost and suitable for all segments of the population regardless of health restrictions.
