Nutricycle Sustainable Feeds is a youth-led agri-enterprise based in Uganda that converts organic waste into affordable, high-quality animal feed boosters. Founded in October 2024, Nutricycle was built on the recognition that Uganda’s livestock sector home to over 4.7 million smallholder farmers is being quietly crippled by one unavoidable expense: the cost of feeding animals. By turning what farmers throw away into something that makes their animals thrive, Nutricycle is proving that the most powerful agricultural solutions can come from within the farm itself.
The Problem They Are Solving
Uganda has 2.2 million piggery farmers alone, and the vast majority of them are caught in a financial trap. Animal feed now accounts for approximately 70% of total livestock production costs, according to Uganda’s Parliamentary Feed Bill 2023. As the prices of conventional feed ingredients such as soybean meal and fishmeal continue to rise, smallholder farmers are left with an impossible choice: buy less feed, settle for poor-quality alternatives, or abandon farming altogether.
The consequences are severe. Animals grow slowly, fall sick more frequently, and produce less. Farm incomes drop. Young people, seeing little future in livestock farming, walk away from it entirely. The rural food supply weakens. A farmer like Mugisha typical of the 80% of small-scale pig farmers across Uganda lives on $2 a day but must spend between $3 and $10 daily just to feed five pigs. Feed costs more than he earns. Without an affordable, accessible alternative, the entire sector is at risk.
Their Solution
Nutricycle produces a liquid feed booster the Nutri Grow Pig & Poultry Booster made from organic waste and farm byproducts through a fermentation and processing method developed by the team. The booster is designed to be mixed with cheap, locally available feeds such as maize bran, dry grass, or household leftovers, dramatically improving their nutritional value without requiring farmers to purchase expensive commercial products.
The usage is simple: farmers apply 200ml of the booster in one liter of water per pig per day. The result is healthier, faster-growing animals at a fraction of the usual cost. Farmers who use Nutricycle’s booster save up to 25% of their feed expenditure and see up to a 40% increase in income a transformational difference for households operating on the thinnest of margins.
The product is multi-nutrient, eco-friendly, affordable, and easy to use qualities that set it apart from every competing product currently available on the Ugandan market.
Products and Pricing
Nutricycle currently offers two products, both priced to be genuinely accessible to smallholder farmers:
Nutri Pig Booster — Unit cost: UGX 2,250 | Selling price: UGX 3,500 | Profit margin: 55%
Nutri Poultry Feed — Unit cost: UGX 2,800 | Selling price: UGX 3,500 | Profit margin: 25%
How It Works
The production cycle begins with the collection of organic waste and farm byproducts. These materials are then fermented and processed using the team’s proprietary method. After 7 to 10 days, the booster is harvested, packaged, and delivered directly to farmers. The process is circular by design it takes what the agricultural system discards and feeds it back into the system as something of genuine value.
Why Nutricycle Matters
The cost of animal feed is not just an agricultural problem it is a poverty problem, a youth employment problem, and a food security problem. Nutricycle attacks all three at once. By making high-quality animal nutrition affordable and accessible, it keeps farmers farming, keeps animals healthy, and keeps rural income circulating in communities that need it most. Every liter of booster produced is also a kilogram of organic waste diverted from landfills, making Nutricycle as good for the environment as it is for the farmers it serves.
