Maajabu is focusing on sustainable Tilapia fish production. We are addressing issues like protein deficiency and limited access to fresh fish faced by Tongogara refugee camp residents. Through innovative aquaculture projects, Maajabu is boosting fish supply, offering affordable protein sources, and creating job opportunities within the community. With a commitment to fairness, affordability, and environmental responsibility, Maajabu aims making a significant impact on the lives of those in the Tongogara Refugee Camp.
Maajabu is a social enterprise in the Tongogara Refugee Camp in Zimbabwe.
They noticed that there was not enough fish for people to eat there. This is a problem because fish have essential nutrients that people need to stay healthy. Also, many people don’t have jobs in the camp, so they can’t afford to buy fish even if they could find it.
They build ponds in the camp and raise Tilapia fish there. This helps because it means there’s more fish available for everyone in the camp. Plus, the fish they sell are fresh and good quality, costing less than people usually pay. Another good thing is that Maajabu is careful about doing things so they don’t harm the environment.
Here’s how it works: First, they get baby fish and food for them. Then, they look after the fish until they grow big enough to sell. After that, they sell the fish to people in the camp or to shops and restaurants nearby.
Maajabu sold all the fish they first grew in just one hour because so many people wanted to buy them. Now, they’re getting bigger and will make even more fish. They’re also getting help to make more extensive ponds to grow even more fish.
