Safeplas

We provide refugee households with a cost-effective and sustainable toilets that do not require deep hole digging.

SafePlas offers cost-effective and sustainable toilets for refugee households, addressing the challenges of deep hole digging and plastic waste. Our commitment to sustainability drives us to recycle plastic waste into panels for toilet construction. These panels enable easy on-site assembly by anyone, fostering community involvement in waste management and recycling. By reducing plastic waste and empowering local communities, SafePlas promotes environmental stewardship and community engagement.

In Uganda, there are around 1.5 million refugees. They live in refugee settlements, with more than 11 of these settlements in Uganda. Building toilets in these places is problematic because it needs a lot of work, not much space, and costs a lot of money. So, people in the camps use bags to go to the toilet and then throw them away, or they use public toilets built by organizations that focus on water, sanitation, and hygiene. A study found that only 60% of households in these settlements have toilets. In one settlement called Kyaka II, with 125,000 refugees, about 5% of babies and young kids get sick with diarrhea.

SafePlas wants to help by giving refugee families toilets that don’t need deep holes dug and solving the plastic waste problem. We care about the environment and want to make things better. Our toilets are made from recycled plastic turned into panels. Anyone can easily and quickly put them together on-site. This helps with plastic waste and lets local people join in with managing waste and recycling.
