I grew up in a slum in Kampala. When it rained, my classes were canceled and I missed school. In particular unforgiving seasons of rain, our homes, and our neighborhood would flood. My family and I had to spend the entire night draining water from the house. I later realized that these conditions were one of the consequences of having poor garbage and plastic waste disposal. Plastics clogged drainage channels, which of course, exacerbated the recurring flooding.
SINA Mpigi is the only space that can change your life and help you in realizing your passion, as well as life purpose. Whether you are a white or a black, Muslim, or Christian, SINA Mpigi is the best place for you. Personally, SINA Mpigi changed my life and the way I see things in this world. My favorite memory in SINA was the first session in the Applied Social Innovation Program to shift your mind from the usual school set to a self-organized and freesponsibility setup. No one is on your neck, telling you what to do.
In 2018, I joined a German-Ugandan Youth Exchange on sustainable production and consumption organized by SINA. The inspiration made me realize that I have to act. I am now the Co-Founder of Ouroots, offering alternatives to single-use plastic products. The change I would like to create in the world is to bring happiness and uplift rural people’s living standards, and have a plastic-free world.
