SINA in Austrian Radio ORF Ö1 [German only]

Today a great 20-minute radio piece on SINA was released in the ORF Ö1 radio and will air again at 10 pm tonight.

You can listen to it anytime here.

Here is a brief summary in English of the description:

Africa’s young and increasingly educated and technologically savvy population, thanks to its population growth, holds the advantage for the continent. Already, 70% of Africans use mobile phones, and by 2035, Africa is projected to have the world’s largest workforce and a significant pool of young talent, innovation, and creativity.

To tap into this potential and boost the economy, African countries need to improve the provision of adequate education and skills to the younger generation, enabling them to take on productive jobs. Uganda, however, struggles in this regard. An innovative alternative approach is being pursued in SINA-Village.

SINA, which stands for Social Innovation Academy, is an educational center for social entrepreneurs supported by European foundations. In this settlement near the village of Mpigi, a learning community has been established for aspiring social entrepreneurs. Given the lack of job creators in Uganda, young men and women from East African countries, without formal education, learn how to create their own jobs.

They respond to complex challenges with unconventional ideas and great dedication, simultaneously making a positive contribution to solving pressing ecological and social issues. The success has quickly borne fruit, as there are now eight additional small SINA centers in East Africa, ranging from Zimbabwe to Congo. During their motorcycle journey, Johannes Kaup and Silvia Tschugg-Kaup made a stop at some of these centers, gaining fascinating insights into the diverse initiatives taking place there.
