In March 2021 we started a Food Forest through Agroforestry in Mpigi Uganda at the SINA Community called “Jangu international”. The Food forest has been growing rapidly and yielded the first crops for consumption within the community in January 2023. The project expanded to work together and empower rural women to learn regenerative farming practices and principles of permaculture with great success. The leading newspaper “New Vision” in Uganda came to see it for itself and published the article “Rural Women Farmers in Mpigi empowered with farming skills”.
Currently, the selected women from different sub-counties in Mpigi are undergoing training at our academy. With the ever-changing climate, we believe it is crucial for stakeholders in the agricultural industry to embrace farming methods that are resilient to climate change. Our goal is not only to increase food in rural homes, but also to train these women to grow food for commercial purposes as well.
As the primary farmers in rural homes, it is essential that these women are trained on not just how to cultivate, but also how to protect the environment. Through this program, we are creating a sustainable seed bank with indigenous seedlings that community members can access. We are also encouraging the use of multiple crops on the same piece of land, making the most out of available resources.
