We are thrilled to share the incredible journey of one of our alumni enterprises, Eco-Shoes Africa, which has been recognized as a UNHCR Innovation project for 2024. The enterprise was born at SINA Loketa in the Bidibidi Refugee Settlement and collects and recycles old leather shoes to locally produce new and affordable shoes for school-going refugee children. It is for and by refugees, and the entire value chain is situated locally within the refugee settlement.
The UNHCR Refugee-led Innovation Fund changes the approach to humanitarian aid by championing the creativity of displaced people to amplify their own solutions. Towards the end of 2023, SINA was able to provide support for Eco-Shoe Africa to grow their production through improved machines. We are excited that UNHCR will provide additional funding and support to scale the production and impact. Parents will afford much-needed footwear for their children, improving their health and educational access. Adults in the community will benefit from vocational training, leading to empowerment through skills development and employment opportunities.
Eco-Shoe Africa’s journey exemplifies the incredible potential of refugee-led innovation, a testament to the power of resilience and the human spirit. As we celebrate their success, we look forward to the continued growth and impact of Eco-Shoe Africa and many more innovative enterprises emerging in SINA communities.
